This tank represented the "state of the art" when introduced. It
had the
"skillet" turret, an oblate inverted bowl inherited from the IS-3,
providing
good protection against AT projectiles. The 100mm gun could fire a variety of
ammunition including AP, HEAT, HVAPPS. Fire control depended on optical sights,
a weakness. The turret was cramped and the main gun could only be depressed to
-4 , a weakness in a hull-down position. Many modifications led to the T-55.
Over 50,000 were built and served with 55countries. Saw combat over all the
world.
