Final Soviet heavy tank of WWII. Modified IS-2 armor to make it more resistant to the German 88mm gun. Radical new turret of a simple hemisphere shape with a thick armored mantlet and heavily angled armor on the hull front to increase effective thickness. Frontal armor slopes down from center. Later problem with broken welds. Mechanical problems particularly the transmission,  prevented its use in WW II. Over 1800 were produced. Had a heavy influence on the design of post war western tanks. Saw combat in 1967 with the Egyptians where 73 were lost to the Israelis.
